Khromtau Wind Power Plant – Flagship Renewable Energy Project Supported by DBK Launched in Kazakhstan

The 150 MW Khromtau Wind Power Plant is one of 26 large-scale projects financed by Development Bank of Kazakhstan JSC (a subsidiary of Baiterek Holding, hereinafter referred to as DBK, the Bank).

This flagship renewable energy project was implemented by ERG Capital Projects with financial support from the Development Bank of Kazakhstan. Investments in the construction amounted to more than 74 billion tenge.

It is worth noting that DBK gives priority to financing projects in the field of renewable energy, supporting the construction of new generating capacities that contribute to achieving the goals of decarbonization and ensuring the country's energy security.

“The financing of the Khromtau Wind Power Plant is a striking example of how state development institutions, together with business, are implementing large-scale projects that lay the foundation of Kazakhstan's green economy,” said Marat Yelibaev, Chairman of the Management Board of the Development Bank of Kazakhstan.

The Wind Power Plant is located in the Aktobe region. In December 2024, the first two units began to generate electricity. The first million kilowatt-hours were produced on January 1, 2025. ERG has now completed the installation of all 24 wind turbines.

The Khromtau Wind Power Plant has become a significant contribution by ERG to achieving the national goal of increasing the share of renewable energy sources in Kazakhstan's energy balance to 50% by 2050.

– The Khromtau Wind Power Plant – our first wind power project, has already become a symbol of ERG's transition to green energy. The Wind Power Plant will not only produce clean energy and reduce the carbon footprint, but will also mark the beginning of a new chapter in Kazakhstan's metallurgy industry – the production of green ferrochrome, the company noted.

With an installed capacity of 150 MW, the Khromtau Wind Power Plant will generate approximately 500 million kWh of green energy per year. The power plant is focused on industry and fully covers the annual electricity needs of the Donskoy Mining and Processing Plant and the Aktobe Ferroalloy Plant of ERG's chrome division.

Annually, the Khromtau Wind Power Plant will reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 440,000 tons and save more than 300,000 tons of coal.

It should be noted that DBK has financed 40 projects, including the construction of new industrial enterprises, energy facilities, as well as projects in the field of tourism and social infrastructure. These enterprises will create more than

30,000 jobs and contribute over 4 trillion tenge to the country's economy.
